Dr. Hans-Jakob Schindler

Former Special Advisor & Expert on Iran Sanctions


Dr. Hans-Jakob Schindler is a former German diplomat and has wide international experience in diplomacy, sanctions strategy, intelligence and security. He is currently serving as Acting Coordinator of the Al-Qaida/Taliban Monitoring Team in the United Nations Security Council.

His experience spans throughout the Middle East, handling delicate dialogs and crises. For 6 years he served as the special advisor to the German ambassador in Tehran until 2011, and advised the German government on the negotiations with the Islamic Republic. During this time he also led the crisis management team of the German embassy during the 2006 and 2009/10 disturbances in Iran. Throughout his career he worked in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central Asia and Israel. His duties included the development of homeland security measures as well as risk mitigation, specifically towards insider threats. Having studied in Germany, the USA, the United Kingdom and Israel, Hans holds a Masters and PhD degree in International Terrorism from St. Andrews University in Scotland.
